Maqsut Narikbayev University Team (“MNU”) won the Annual AIFC Court Moot Final 2024. This was the 7th year of the competition. Twelve law student teams from Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan, participated in the preliminary rounds of the competition. KIMEP University was the Runner-Up in the Final.
The Final teams were the two outstanding teams from the preliminary rounds which were judged by senior lawyers from the AIFC Court Users' Committee. MNU received the Winners' Cup for the 4th consecutive year. The Best Oralist Award was awarded to Darina Koishybayeva, MNU. All finalists were awarded the opportunity to undertake the AIFC Court and IAC Internship Programme.
The judges in the Final were the AIFC Court Chief Justice, The Rt. Hon. The Lord Burnett of Maldon, and AIFC Court Justices, Justice Sir Stephen Richards and Justice Tom Montagu-Smith KC. Opening ceremony speakers included: Mr. Yerzhan Zhiyenbayev, Assistant to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Legal Issues, Ms. Kathy Leach, HMA UK Ambassador to the Republic of Kazakhstan, and Ms. Aigul Kydyrbayeva, Judge of the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Distinguished guests included: Mr. Azamat Yeskarayev, Minister of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Ambassadors and other diplomats from 11 embassies in the Republic of Kazakhstan, AIFC Court Users’ Committee Members, and other representatives from the legal and business communities in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The AIFC Court Moot competition provides a unique opportunity in the Eurasia region for law students in Eurasia to research and present oral legal arguments in the English language to senior AIFC Court judges on matters of commercial common law. This year the students presented on a legal problem that involved the provision of a digitally equipped World Nomadic Games venue in Astana on an appeal to a fictitious decision of the AIFC Court of First Instance.

The AIFC Court is an independent legal entity. It has its own procedural rules modelled on English common law procedures and leading international practice. The AIFC Court is separate and independent from the courts of the Republic of Kazakhstan. It consists of two tiers: a Court of First Instance, which includes a specialist division known as the Small Claims Court; and a Court of Appeal. It has exclusive jurisdiction over disputes arising out of the activities and operations of the AIFC and jurisdiction in the case of other disputes in which all parties agree in writing to give the AIFC Court jurisdiction. The International Arbitration Centre (IAC) is an independent legal entity. It has its own procedural rules modelled on best international practice. It has its own panel of leading international arbitrators and mediators having many years of arbitration and mediation experience in commercial law, including oil and gas, trade, construction, energy, financial services, banking, Islamic finance, insurance, and intellectual property. The Astana International Financial Centre (AIFC) is an independent jurisdiction that started operations in 2018.
